Agri-Maps

The Province of Manitoba has released a new soil viewer called AgriMaps. It is publicly available at http://agrimaps.gov.mb.ca.

The new soil viewer allows users to explore soil information to help producers, agronomists, planners and the public make more informed land management decisions. Users can search AgriMaps by legal land description, river lot or by towns. Viewers can select the different scales of available soil data in Manitoba and their related uses in addition to measuring and overlaying different data layers like rural municipalities, drain order maps and watershed boundaries. Viewers can also print the information with an air photo background so that landscape properties like hills, trees and rivers can be seen.

Although soil survey data is highly technical, AgriMaps displays various soil properties in an attractive, easy to use format. Soil information is shown in soil polygons that are areas on a map that contain soil with a standard set of attributes. These are identified by a simple or compound map unit. The soil map unit contains one or more soil components that have specific uses and management. The different intensities of soil information allow clients to make either field or regional scale interpretations for land capability, suitability and productivity. These can each be viewed in AgriMaps for individual soil map units.

With AgriMaps, free access through the Internet is available to the long-term investment in soil survey and land management in Manitoba.
